Frank Julie

Frank Julie is an independent organisational development and transformation consultant. He has been involved in development work for the past 26 years as an activist and organiser in various student-, youth-, civic- and political formations around South- and Southern Africa. He lived in various Southern African countries such as Zimbabwe, Namibia and Botswana. He currently works with non-government- and community based organisations all over Southern- and East Africa. Frank is also the founder and convener of The Leadership Circle, a group of leaders and managers of NGOs and CBOs active all over South Africa.

As development consultant Frank specializes in professional fundraising, proposal writing, sustainability strategies, marketing, board development, monitoring and evaluation of projects, training facilitators, project management, personal leadership and life management, building relationship responsibility, effective money management, volunteer management and strategic planning.

Frank has travelled extensively in various parts of Africa, Europe, South America and the USA to study models of development intervention on the ground. He has an extreme passion for working with established and emerging community-based organisations and acts as strategic adviser to many. He has trained and mentored hundreds of leaders all over Africa over the past 15 years, many of them now running their own organisations. 50% of his time is spent doing voluntary work with non-funded organisations.

He is the author of "The Art of Leadership and Management on the Ground" (A practical guide for leaders and managers to build sustainable organisations for permanent social change). Frank is also a regular contributor to various development journals, magazines and websites such as http://www.kubatana.org.zw/ (alliance of NGOs in Zimbabwe), http://www.sangonet.org.za/ (NGO website in South Africa), Care Direct, National Association of Child and Youth Care journal, Professional Management Review-Africa and many more. Frank studied development at the Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA) in Washington DC, social science at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and adult education and development at the University of Cape Town (UCT).

Frank grew up in Bishop Lavis on the Cape Flats in South Africa and now lives in Parow, Cape Town. He regularly commutes in between Cape Town, Johannesburg, and other locations in Africa where he conducts most of his training for leaders and managers in the non-profit sector in Africa and other parts of the world.
